PSNR vs . quality assessment metrics for image and video codec performance evaluation

چکیده
One of the most important performance metrics for evaluation and comparison of image or video codecs is the Rate/Distortion (R/D) where quality is measured in terms of PSNR (Peak Signal-toNoise Ratio). It is well known that PSNR does not always rank quality of an image or video sequence in the same way that a human being. There are many other factors considered by the human visual system and the brain. So, a lot efforts were performed to define an objective video quality metric that is able to measure the quality distortion close to the one perceived by the destination user. We analyze the behaviour of some of the most relevant objective quality metrics when they are applied to video sequences, compressed by different video codecs at different bit-rates taking as reference the classical PSNR metric. So we try to find if there is a more accurate metric in terms of human quality perception that could substitute PSNR in the R/D plots used in the performance evaluation of different coding proposals.

Today almost all components for processing and distribution of still images and video sequences are digital. The large amounts of digital data can often only be handled by use of data compression methods. Especially in case of high compression ratios and low bitrates respectively this results in information loss and appearance of visible coding artifacts, which are annoyant for human observers ...
متن کاملOn the Performance of Video Quality Assessment Metrics under Different Compression and Packet Loss Scenarios
When comparing the performance of video coding approaches, evaluating different commercial video encoders, or measuring the perceived video quality in a wireless environment, Rate/distortion analysis is commonly used, where distortion is usually measured in terms of PSNR values. However, PSNR does not always capture the distortion perceived by a human being. As a consequence, significant effort...
متن کاملSubjective quality evaluation of the upcoming HEVC video compression standard
High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) is the latest attempt by ISO/MPEG and ITU-T/VCEG to define the next generation compression standard beyond H.264/MPEG-4 Part 10 AVC. One of the major goals of HEVC is to provide efficient compression for resolutions beyond HDTV. However, the subjective evaluations that led to the selection of technologies were bound to HDTV resolution. Moreover, performance e...
متن کاملA generic method to increase the prediction accuracy of visual quality metrics
A new simple, effective and generic method is presented that allows to increase the prediction accuracy of visual quality metrics. This method is based on the observation, that the correlation between subjective results and objective metrics is very high for one special sequence or image coded at several bit rates with the same codec. This can be used to decrease the absolute error between the ...
متن کاملComparison of video codecs and coded video sequences quality using the latest objective and subjective assessment methods
This paper presents the comparisons of the latest subjective video sequence quality assessment methods versus objective quality assessment using H.261, H.263+ and H.264 advanced video coding (AVC). A Simultaneous Double Stimulus for Continuous Evaluation (SDSCE) method was used for subjective quality assessment. The Peak Signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR) method and the-state-of-the art Structural SI...
